Graduation at Ara
Graduation ceremonies are held twice a year for Christchurch campuses in Spring (1 ceremony) and Autumn (2 ceremonies on the same day) and once a year in February for Southern campuses. See our ceremony dates for more information.
Graduation is a celebration of your academic achievement which you can share with family, friends, fellow students and the whole Ara community.
Attending your graduation ceremony
Once you have successfully completed your approved programme of study you will receive an email if you are eligible to attend a graduation ceremony. Only if you wish to personally attend graduation do you need to complete the on-line graduation form, by the date indicated, to confirm your place at graduation.
If you choose to personally attend graduation, the Christchurch ceremonies are held at the Horncastle Arena, Christchurch and the Timaru ceremonies are held at the Southern Trust Event Centre.
If you are completing the on-line graduation form and you cannot remember your student portal username and password you will need to contact the ICT Service Desk at 03 940 8800 or email@example.com
Not attending your graduation ceremony
If you choose not to attend your graduation ceremony your don’t need to do anything in response to the email advising you are eligible to graduate.
For up to 3 weeks after your graduation ceremony date you can collect you qualification certificate in person from Central Academic Records, N118, Madras Street Campus, Christchurch. After that time your qualification will be mailed to you so please ensure you update your contact details in the Student Portal so we have you most current address.
Note you must wait until the date of your graduation ceremony before you can collect your qualification certificate in person. However if you are receiving a National Certificate or Diploma this will be released to you as soon as it is received by Central Academic Records Office. You will receive an email to advise when it can be collected.
You will need to bring proof of your identity when collecting your qualification, eg your student ID card or your driver’s licence.
If you choose to attend the graduation ceremony, please read the Graduation Guide which outlines all the ceremony information regarding regalia, assembly, procession and tickets. You are required to wear the regalia appropriate to your qualification.

Up to five tickets for guests are available on request.There are no reserved seat numbers. You will be given the opportunity to request extra tickets. Extra tickets requested will be posted, if available, approximately two weeks before the ceremony.
If you or any of your guests have special mobility or access needs, please let us know either on your application form or by contacting us on (03) 940 8542 or firstname.lastname@example.org nearer the date.
If you or any of your guests communicate by NZ Sign Language, please let us know early so we can arrange for an interpreter to be on stage during the ceremony by phoning 03 940 8542 or email email@example.com.

A photographer will be at the ceremony. Every graduate will be photographed as they are presented with their award on stage. These photographs will be are available for purchase as either prints and/or digital files.
