From the Winter 2018 Waha Kōrero student magazine:
Ara is getting ready to relocate 1800 nursing, midwifery and medical imaging students, plus their lecturers, to the brand new Manawa health research and education facility next to Christchurch Hospital.
The new Manawa health research and education facility at 276 Antigua street is almost ready for nursing, midwifery and medical imaging students to move into.
They are moving in with the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) and University of Canterbury (UC), so that the organisations can share world-class health-related resources and expertise.
Our students will have access to local and international healthcare professionals and researchers and the very best facilities, including a whole floor of simulation environments.
Imagine a real hospital operating theatre with all the equipment and systems that our graduates will use in their future workplaces, but with technicians hidden away operating the high-tech mannequins to create different scenarios! The mannequins can conveniently have a heart attack, faint, puke, etc!, so that students from Ara can practise their awesome skills. Plus, they might even be training with real life health specialists from CDHB who are undertaking professional development training.
And that’s not all. Also on the simulation floor, our students will be training in a post-surgery recovery room, a trauma room (aka ‘blood room’… ew!), a home environment and hospital ward rooms. You can see why we are excited about Manawa!
The building is almost ready to be handed over and kitted-out with the latest equipment; this will happen from mid-June onwards. When everything is 100% ready to go, Ara students will progressively move to Manawa; there is a lot of planning and work happening to ensure that there is no disruption to their studies.
Ara and CDHB, in particular, already work closely together developing the current healthcare workforce of capable and confident work ready graduates, and planning to address the predicted shortages in skilled professionals in the near future. The Manawa collaboration takes the partnership to the next level - an unrivalled education and research hub in central Christchurch.
Manawa is a flagship facility of the new Te Papa Hauora/Health Precinct, which will make Christchurch a hub of innovative and collaborative healthcare research, education and industry engagement.
We won’t be saying goodbye to nursing, midwifery and medical imaging students completely of course! They are still most definitely Ara students with access to all the Ara facilities, events and resources, so they will be visiting the City Campus Christchurch quite often.
