Ara Bachelor of Design students Jenny Ritchie and Sam Lemon achieved outstanding success in last month’s ECC NZ Student Craft/Design Awards, capping off a successful year for Creative Industries students at Ara.
The Year 3 Applied Visual Arts students represented Ara with their unique award entries. Jenny won the Tuatara Ceramics Award for her ceramic piece ‘Cosmographicum', and was highly commended for her second piece ‘Revolutionibus’. Sam was highly commended for her piece ‘Material Wealth’ in The Village Goldsmith Jewellery Award.
Jenny’s award winning piece ‘Cosmographicum' is a black ceramic sphere surrounded by a piece of basalt rock gathered from Waitarere on the Kapiti coast.

“My vision is inspired by the Renaissance astronomers who combined their imaginations with mathematical minds and their spiritual search for God’s formula for the design of the cosmos. Ultimately I wanted to produce a work that speaks of science but also holds and reveals a sense of the divine,” she said of her work.
Bruce Russell, Manager of Art and Design says the staff are all incredibly proud of the young artists coming through Creative Industries at Ara.
“These are prestigious national awards attracting entries from all of New Zealand’s major tertiary institutions. Not only do awards such as these show off our student’s talents, but also the processes of meeting award briefs, documenting projects and arranging for the entry and display of work, provides genuine real world experience that will inform their professional work in the future,” he says.
