Jerry and his dad at the Art Exhibition Awards
One award wasn't enough for Diploma in Arts and Media student Jerry Westaway. He took home three awards at the Youth Week Art Exhibition in Timaru. The exhibition gives young people a chance to display their talent.
The art exhibition ran from 24-27 May and was open to anyone from age 12 to 24. They could enter paintings, drawings, videos and other visual work.
Jerry entered a short film he made two years ago.
"I made the short film 'The Kinetic Files' when I was still in high school. It took me six months to finish it. It's very visual; I inspired myself with Kubrick and German expressionism style."
The Kinetic Files won two awards: the Supreme Award in Electronic Media and the Overall Supreme Award.
"I couldn't believe it, I won two prizes for my short film."
He also won $100 for his short film and $10 for a painting he submitted. And a Merit in Painting sets the counter at three awards.
"The painting was more an experiment and me exploring what I could create. And it looked like the jury liked it, because I got the Merit in Painting."
When Jerry finishes his diploma he'll move to Christchurch to do a Bachelor in Screen and Television Production at Ara. But his Overall Supreme Award trophy… will stay at the Timaru Campus art department.
