Santa has come early for Robyn Morris, who will have a ready-made house delivered to her lifestyle block in Sefton tonight.
The three bedroom house was built by trades students at Ara Institute of Canterbury and sold on Trademe to cover the cost of materials. The houses give carpentry, plumbing, electrical and joinery students the chance to develop their skills in conditions that replicate the industry, under strict supervision. They also have the satisfaction of seeing a project coming to fruition.
Robyn was “astonished” to see the house advertised online. “I heard they were well built. And the price is amazing,” she said.
By buying a ready-made house, Robyn dodges the stress of construction and will only need to do the fun parts like choosing finishings and colours. “I have to do the floor coverings and wall coverings, and I have to sort out the oven and range-hood. The bathroom is all done. I will basically have the services hooked up. It’s reasonably simple.”
She plans to move in in February.
Robyn was grateful to the team at Ara. “We need more of these! A lot of people I know are quite jealous.”
