Some 25 young Pasifika from across South Canterbury cooked up a storm at the Get Cooking - Pasifika event at Ara this week. The school holiday event has been successful at the Christchurch campus previously and has now been extended to South Canterbury.
Ara aims to remove barriers to tertiary education for Māori and Pasifika secondary school students. Bringing them on to campus for a fun and relaxed event can be the first step in familiarising students and their families with campuses and with some of the people who work there. Students then feel more comfortable and can imagine being part of that environment.
This experience can open doors to exploring options for tertiary study and alert students to the range of options available at Ara – from engineering to performance, cooking, ICT, trades and much more.
