Ten Ara students from Māori, Pacific, and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds were awarded scholarships by Pegasus Health (Charitable) Ltd in a moving ceremony last Thursday 11 May.
Recipients of the 2017 Pegasus Health Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Scholarships (L-R) Hafsa Abdulhamad (nursing), Benya Ickenroth (nursing), Yufei Jin (medical imaging), Mohamud Osman (medicine), Maria Zawari (medical imaging), Cherina Lugtu (nursing), Folasade Iposu (nursing) and Naofumi Osato (nursing).
Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy, who was the guest speaker at the event, congratulated the 21 recipients in total and urged them to celebrate their achievements, which for many had involved overcoming difficult obstacles.
Ara nursing tutor Ada Campbell said the event was “very moving, because each of the recipients got up and told their story. Many of them had to fight to get into education.
“It just proved how important education opportunities are and showed the huge impact education has on people’s lives.”
In applying for a scholarship, each of the recipients wrote a 1000-word essay about their backgrounds and their reasons for pursuing a career in health.
