About health promotion

Health promoters take a holistic view to health. Their aim is to achieve optimal health and wellbeing for all through sustainable behaviour change, supported by changes in physical, social, and economic environments. They work with individuals, groups and often whole communities, empowering them to make healthier choices such as increasing their physical activity level.

The incorporation of physical activity in everyday life, alongside other healthy lifestyle choices, reduces the rist of developing non-communicable chronic diseases, positively impacting on both physical and mental health.

Studying health promotion

Within our three year (full time) degree programme you’ll study theory and develop the practical skills needed for working in the health and wellness sectors. Our degree in Physical Activity and Health Promotion covers a broad range of health related topics, from cultural awareness, exercise prescription and health promotion to human nutrition. It will provide you with the communication, problem solving, critical analysis and teamwork skills required within the multidisciplinary field of health promotion.

Some of the areas covered within the degree include: the determinants of health and health inequalities; settings-based approaches to health promotion - where we live, learn, work and play; cultural understandings of health within the context of Aotearoa/New Zealand; disability, health and independent living; physical activity prescription for health, disease and rehabilitation; research design and implementation; work placements with physical activity and health organisations (e.g. Community & Public Health, Maori and Pasifika health providers, Green Prescription and Workplace Wellness).
