Gain all the professional skills and knowledge you need to apply for industry certification as a plumber with this highly practical qualification.

Trained in best practice standards, you will learn how to use and maintain plumbing hand tools and trade equipment as well as how to install, secure and maintain domestic and commercial plumbing systems, appliances, fittings and structures.

You will further develop your professional skills and knowledge with study in will be trained in how to excavate and trench, remove asbestos products, solder metal joints and apply sealants to joints. In other unit standards you will learn how to join lead sheet and tube by lead burning, design and construct sheet metal plumbing requirements, weld steel plumbing pipe and sheet, and design and fabricate sheet lead and tube plumbing items.

This qualification is delivered concurrently with the National Certificate in Gasfitting and forms part of the requirements for a registered plumber.

You must be able to work in a busy trades-related environment.

Credit recognition is available for this programme; if you have related skills, knowledge and/or experience, it may count towards part or even all of the qualification.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements
  • or the Certificate in Pre Trade Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying Level 2.

  • 36 NCEA credits at Level 1 including 12 credits in English. and 12 credits in mathematics.
Alternative requirements
  • Evidence of literacy, numeracy and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through study, work and/or life experience. Literacy and numeracy assessments are available.

Additional requirements
  • A current training agreement and employment in the industry.
English requirements
  • If English is not your first language you may also be required to provide evidence of your English language skills. If you have no evidence of your English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, contact us for an assessment.

    Note: If you have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements you are not required to provide evidence of English Language Skills.

Career opportunities

When you graduate with this qualification you can apply for registration as a plumber with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. Your registration will be dependent on you meeting Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) requirements. Career options include working for as a plumber for a private company or you may like to consider becoming an independent contractor.

Study pathways

With this qualification you are eligible to apply to sit examinations set by the Board of Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers to become a registered gasfitter.

If you are interested in sitting these exams our short awards may be of interest to you. These include: Craftsman Common (G11016), Craftsman Plumbing (G11017), Craftsman Gas (G11018) and Solar Hot Water Installation (SHWI101).
